India is the 12th wealthiest nation in the world

We love patting ourselves on the back. I can always rely on my trusty friends at Rediff.com to ensure that Indians can read about how great we are or how great India is. The latest news based on a report by the World Bank is that India is the 12th wealthiest nation in the world based on GDP. India is ahead of Australia, Mexico and Russia which is somehow noteworthy. This is good news as it does show India's emergence in the world. But let's not let all the good news that Indian journalists like to throw out delude us in any way. The gap between rich and poor is widening. Illiteracy, poverty and corruption remain rampant as do the prevalance of diseases such as malaria, typhoid, etc. The list goes on. It's a good start, but there is much more work to be done....
